When we founded Native Color out of our Austin apartment over two years ago, we were inspired by a vision that the clothing industry could one day be better for the environment and better for people than it is today.
As it stands now, the fashion and apparel industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. That's right up behind the oil and gas industry, which, despite fashion's best efforts remains number one.
We founded Native Color to prove that it didn't have to be this way. Clothing wasn't always made from synthetic fabrics or treated with toxic chemicals that pollute our waterways. We set out to build a clothing company for everyone that was made entirely with natural, biodegradable fabrics and non-toxic, plant-based dyes.
But we knew that this alone wouldn't be enough. For the clothing industry to change, we all need to change the way we shop. When we commit to buying more sustainable products, we vote with our dollars and large corporations follow suit.
To spread the word about our beliefs, we created The Wear Natural Manifesto. The manifesto contains eight simple principles that we can keep in mind each time we're buying new clothes.
They're not strict laws, and this isn't an ideology to determine who's "holier-than-thou". They're just little steps we can all take in our daily lives to make the world a better place.
If you're inspired by The Wear Natural Manifesto, take a moment to sign your name to the bottom and share it with your friends to encourage them to think more about what they wear, too.
